BMW Drives EV Strategy with Neue Klasse and iX3 Production

BMW will begin production of its first Neue Klasse electric vehicle – the iX3 – at a new factory in Debrecen, Hungary, in late October 2025. The site is purpose-built for digital-first, fossil-free manufacturing and represents a key pivot in the company’s EV strategy.

Unlike any other BMW facility, Plant Debrecen will run entirely on renewable energy during normal operations. Every major workflow, from stamping to final assembly, was digitally validated in advance, enabling faster startup and fewer surprises.

BMW first hit a full digital production milestone for Debrecen in March 2023 using virtual reality. The company has since refined its build strategy using that simulation data. The press shop, for example, was reengineered to reduce waste and cut energy input. Logistics mapping helped trim material movement to lean minimums.

The iX3 and Neue Klasse innovation

The iX3 will be the first of BMW’s Neue Klasse models to come off the line. These next-gen EVs ride on a redesigned vehicle architecture, a new battery platform, and an updated software stack. Combined, they form the backbone of BMW’s lineup through 2027. By then, Neue Klasse systems will underpin 40 new or refreshed models.

BMW will gradually ramp up Debrecen’s output after launch, giving its digital production systems time to scale and adapt. Every stage of assembly will be tracked and validated in real time to catch inefficiencies before they grow and to lock in quality from day one.

Redefining vehicle production

What Debrecen signals is not just a new vehicle but a new method of making one:

  • Factory design and product development executed in parallel
  • No fossil fuels in daily operation
  • Digital twins and full simulation to compress lead time
  • Modular workflows designed to flex with future models

This is a full-scale testbed for how BMW plans to build increasingly software-driven, clean-powered, and modular by design. The iX3 launch will kick off more than just a new platform; it will hardwire new discipline into every future rollout.
