Xpeng has officially launched the Max variant of its Mona M03 sedan, emphasizing enhanced autonomous driving capabilities as part of its expanding smart EV lineup. The debut took place today on May 20 — China’s informal Valentine’s Day — with Chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng using the occasion to signal a new stage in Xpeng’s product roadmap.
First announced in August 2024 at a starting price of RMB 155,800 ($21,600), the Mona M03 Max has faced multiple delivery delays. It was initially expected to reach customers following the 2025 Lunar New Year. The unveiling marks a restart for the model’s delivery cycle, now focused on its upgraded intelligent driving suite.
While full technical specifications for the Max variant remain under wraps, He Xiaopeng has previously described it as featuring “the industry’s top autonomous driving technology.” At a recent AI event, he projected that high-level autonomous features could reach 50 percent adoption within the decade, with some segments reaching up to 90 percent. The Mona M03 Max is positioned as an early platform for this transition, embedding AI-based capabilities into a mainstream EV product.
Market response to the standard M03 has been strong. In April alone, Xpeng delivered 14,210 units, making the Mona M03 the company’s top-performing model and accounting for over 40 percent of its monthly deliveries.
That sales momentum provides a base for the Max variant, which targets buyers interested in enhanced driver-assistance functionality without leaving the compact sedan price bracket.
The launch extends Xpeng’s strategy of seeding advanced software features into mid-market vehicles, rather than isolating automation within high-end flagship models. The Mona sub-brand is expected to play a central role in Xpeng’s scale-up of smart driving features in the years ahead.
